R. "Jay" Walton, 57, of Keizer was born in Myrtle Point, OR to Stanford "Dick" Walton and Elaine Walton, the last of three children. He grew up in Coos Bay, OR. He played football and wrestled for Marshfield High School and graduated in 1974. He went on to attend Lewis and Clark College and the University of Oregon.
Jay worked for Crowley Maritime before going on to work for Pacific Log Scaling and Grading Bureau. He was involved in log scaling from 1979- late 2013. He was a log scaler and later became a field supervisor. He loved his job, his co-workers and the timber industry.
Jay met his wife Sandy in Corvallis, OR in 1991. They were married March 17, 1993 in Portland, OR. Early in their marriage they enjoyed mountain biking, golfing, fishing, crabbing and boating together. Jay was also very passionate about breeding labradors and photography.
Jay was affiliated with The Order of the Antelope and the Elks Lodge. He was full of interesting stories and useless, yet interesting, information on just about any subject. One of his dreams was to write a book about his time and experiences in Alaska.
In 2001, Jay became a grandfather for the first time. Riley was the light of his life. In 2003, his granddaughter Sydney was born and in 2007, his grandson Grayson. He was known as "Papa" to the kids. And to the kids' friends he was known as, "Grandpa Candy". He was a wonderful and devoted father and grandfather. He donated money to Riley's KYSA baseball team two years in a row to help offset costs for parents, which was greatly appreciated by all.
Jay's survivors include his wife Sandy Walton, daughter Nicki Gates, grandson Riley Gates, granddaughter Sydney Gates and grandson Grayson Gates all of Keizer, OR. His mother, Elaine Walton of Tigard, Or. Sister Dicky Waldron of Sherborn, MA and brother Carter Walton of Beaverton, OR.
