Hazel Krater Obituary

December 18, 1911 - March 27, 2014

Hazel Ann Krater was born December 18, 1911 in Coal County Oklahoma. She died March 27, 2014 at the age of 102 in Salem, following a severe heart attack. Hazel was the seventh of nine children and the last surviving member of her family.

She married Oliver (Hack) Krater in 1927. Their surviving children are Lela Krater, (Rouse, Vitaris) Friesen of Yuma AZ, Jack Krater of Dallas OR, Jesse Krater of Salem and Thurman Krater of Salem. There were eleven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren.

In 1945 the family moved to Salem OR. Hazel was ambitious and a very hard worker. She raised her own vegetables, sewed for her family and others to help with the family income. She was active in her church, and on many occasions took people in need into her home and helped provide for them. She passed on to her children a strong faith in God, a love for music, and she helped train them to sing. Lela was a soloist, the three sons became known as The Krater Brothers folk singers. She was happiest when she could have her family gathered around her table enjoying her cooking, singing, telling stories, and making laughter. As industrious as she was she could always find a way to make homemade remedies for almost any illness, and provide meals, even during the years when many could not. She has left her family with many stories and memories, and a love for God.

Services will be held at Restlawn Memory Gardens on Thursday April 3 at 11:30 with a reception following at Howell Edwards Doerksen Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors.
