Loren E. Thornton|
July 29, 1932 - March 6, 2014
Loren E. Thornton, also known by many as "Shorty", was a man who embodied quiet strength, humility, and integrity. He completed his final project on Thursday, March 6th, 2014.
Loren was born to Otto and Lillian Thornton (Schafroth) on July 29, 1932 on a farm in Lenox Iowa. Loren was the sixth child in a family of eight. At the age of two the family moved to Oregon, where they eventually settled in Brownsville on their family farm. Here Loren learned a work ethic and a discipline that he lived, for which many admired him. As a sixth grader Loren met his sweetheart for life Margaret (Maggie) Ridinger. They married June 9th 1951. Loren and Maggie have two children Leeana (Terry Fletchall) and Jeff, two granddaughters Kelly Fletchall and Lauren Fletchall Benjamin (Matt) and one great grandson Ryder.
Loren had a passion for perfection in all of his endeavors, whether it was his career, his hobbies or his sports. He was known as a fair and respected educator at Glide High School, Waldo Middle School, and North Salem High School. Loren was a master craftsman in woodworking. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fan of Oregon State athletics. The Family would like to thank the staff at The Woods, Building D, whose care and thoughtfulness is most appreciated. A Celebration of Life will be held in Loren's honor on Saturday, April 26th at Rudy's at the Salem Golf Club from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M.
The Family's wish is for all who met Shorty will remember a quiet gentleman, a slight smile and a legendary handshake.
