Donald Hittle Obituary
Donald Raymond Hittle

Jan. 30, 1931 - April 2, 2014

Donald R. Hittle, beloved and devoted husband, father, and grandfather passed away at his home on Wednesday, April 2, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was 83.

Don was born on January 30, 1931, in Onawa, Iowa, to Alfred and Ida (Odom) Hittle. He grew up with his brothers and sister experiencing "life on the farm."

After his school-aged years, Don served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955, and then joined his family who had moved from Iowa to the Mt. Angel and Silverton areas.

A few years later, Don met his wife Dorothy Snook in Salem and they married in 1958. They settled in Keizer and raised their family which includes sons Timothy (Susan), Stayton; Robert (Barb), Keizer; and daughter Jackie (Marvin) Rickard, Salem. His family grew to also include 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Don was very proud of his family and always was very happy and excited to have the "crowd" get together for holidays and occasional gatherings. Sadly, Don's wife Dorothy passed away in 1999. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Al and Ida, among other family members and friends.

During his career in agriculture, Don worked on onion farms in the Lake Labish area and then worked another 35 years with Ernie Zielinski Farms until retiring in 1993. As a result of all his long and hard work, he was then able to enjoy a well-deserved 20+ years of retirement.

Throughout his life, Don had many great moments camping and fishing with family and friends, and those times provided many special, fun, and cherished memories. Don's other hobbies included gardening, wood-working, mechanics, and he was just an overall talented handyman who could do just about anything.

Survivors include his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; twin brother Dean; other brothers Gary and Fred; and sister Linda Roberts.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8, at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service followed by burial at Belcrest Memorial Park. In memory of Don, the family asks that contributions be made to the . The family wishes to thank family and friends for their support and the staff from Willamette Valley Hospice who assisted Don and his family during the final stages of his ife.
