Richard (Dick) Paul Oates

June 10, 1936 - April 2, 2014

Richard (Dick) Paul Oates passed away on April 2, 2014 at his home in Monmouth surrounded by his family.

Dick was born June 10, 1936 in Placerville, California to Albert E. and Florence A. Oates. The family moved soon thereafter to operate a Dairy Farm in Turlock, California and then later to Mendocino, California where Richard graduated high school.

Upon his graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force with stops in Hayward, California, Wichita Falls, Texas and finally to Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington. He also spent several months deployed in Guam.

On January 28, 1956 Dick married Flora Rose Wilson and after his discharge from the Air Force they moved to Fort Bragg, California and he managed Armour Oil Stations in Fort Bragg and Willits. He later became assistant manager of a Shell station in Fort Bragg until the company asked him to move to Monmouth to become proprietor of the local station which opened it doors on November 7, 1968.

Dick continued to run the franchise and eventually purchased the station from Shell where he serviced customers until its sale in 1995. After the sale he worked at the Independence Liquor Store with his wife.

During his time in the Monmouth area Dick was involved in numerous community activities. He served on the Monmouth Planning Board and in 1969 joined the Jaycees and was voted to the position of JCI Senator. The group was also responsible for starting the annual Independence Day fireworks and 4th of July BBQ. In addition he was a long time member of the Independence Elks. Dick did not consider any of this work as he enjoyed the company of all his great friends.

After retirement Dick and Flora loved to travel and went on many cruises. They visited all the continents but one and 18 different states. In Dick's own words "I was a lucky man!" In his family's words "Dick, your family loved you everyday and you will be truly missed."

Dick is survived by his wife of 58 years, Flora and their three daughters, Vicky (Tom) Skinner, Terry Oates (Nancy Pinkerton) and Tracy Oates, their grandchildren Lindsey (Jason) Hale and Brandon Skinner and one great grandchild, Aiden Hale.

Services will be held at Restlawn Memory Gardens, Monday, April 7th at 2:00 P.M. A celebration of life will be held on a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers a donation in Dick's name may be made to the Casey Eye Clinic through the Independence Elks or to Willamette Valley Hospice.
