James Bradford Ellingson|
May 23, 1918 - April 15, 2014
Born in Great Falls, MT to Alfred and Lois Ellingson, James died Tuesday at home with his wife and daughters. Jim was raised in Spokane, WA with his siblings, Bette Lambier and Dolph Ellingson. In 1940 He married Helen Mae Blakesley with whom he enjoyed a 73 year marriage. During the war they worked for the Weather Bureau helping new aircraft safely cross the mountains. Jim return to college to become and educator and in 1946. Jim moved his family to Hermiston to become the High School principal. After 15 years, he returned to college again to complete his Ed.D. at the University of Oregon which then led to work at the Oregon Department of Education. Deciding to return to teaching, he joined the faculty at OCE (now Western Oregon) in 1971. During this time they also owned and operated a small Christmas tree farm. Selling trees and wreaths during the holidays was very special to them.
Jim was active in the Methodist Church, Phi Beta Kappa, Sons of Norway, Meals on Wheels and caring for his wife Helen. After retirement they traveled to Europe, Hawaii and the Oregon Coast often sharing time with family and friends at their timeshares in those locations. Jim was especially fond of returning to Hermiston for class reunions, walking his dog, and ice cream. His grandchildren know him as Opa and knew him to be a soft touch for getting an ice cream treat.
Jim is survived by his wife Helen, daughters Pat Ennes (Richard), Carol Mulder, and Louise Roth (Ted); also by seven grandchildren, Greg Mulder, Eric Mulder, Cameron Mulder, Nikol Rochez, Kjirsten Petersen, Darcy Hawes and Jeremy Roth and 9 great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be 10:00 am, Friday, April 18 at First United Methodist Church in Salem, OR. Contributions may be made to the Marion Polk Food Share at 1660 Salem Industrial Dr NE, Salem, OR 97301. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
