Gayle LaBranche Frederick
September 1, 1939 - June 10, 2014
Gayle LaBranche Frederick, our beautiful, funny, sparkling, loving "Gaylie" left us in body but not in spirit on the 10th of June, 2014. She could not only light up a room, she could light up the whole world around her.
Gayle was born on September 1, 1939, a date also significant to the rest of humanity as the day World War II began. Her parents were Kenneth and Mary LaBranche and her birthplace was Salem, Oregon. Gayle attended Sacred Heart Academy and St. Joseph's School in Salem. She really blossomed when she transferred to South Salem High School, where she was both pretty and popular. It was there she met her husband to be John Frederick. They would marry, but not for another 25 years. After graduation Gayle attended Phagan's School of Beauty, where she met the man who would be her first husband, Gary Uppendahl. Success came to the two of them as hairdressers in Woodburn, Oregon. Their union was blessed by four children; Brian, Beth, Brook and Blake. Sadly Gayle would lose the last two boys over the years, tragedies that never left her. After the breakup of her marriage, and an unexpected meeting with her old boyfriend John, she allowed herself to be swept off her feet and ended up in the most beautiful part of Southern California, a little bit of Oregon, Lake Sherwood. While her husband had success with his production company, Gayle kept her hand in the beauty business at various salons, while acting in several of John's films. It was mutually decided she should stick to hairdressing, when an opportunity arose to serve as a driver for Mr. and Mrs. Robert Young, the famous actor. This pleasant association lasted for years until Betty's final illness. From the hospital she summoned Gayle to be in charge of Robert's care. Betty and Bob had been together for 70 years and it was felt that he would not survive her loss. After Betty's passing, Gayle coordinated life at his Westlake Village home…one night, while he was still grieving, Gayle served him dinner dressed in a cow suit, complete with udders. Robert looked up from his plate to behold this spectactle and burst into laughter. He lived in relative happiness another five and a half years. After Mr. Young passed away in 1998, Gayle enjoyed traveling and cruising with her husband. She continued to fascinate and charm us all until she was taken from us.
She leaves behind her grieving husband John, her sister Anne Marie Jansen, daughter Beth Edwards (husband Fred) of Simi Valley, CA, son Brian Uppendahl of Cathedral City, CA, granddaughters Mekenna Edwards of Simi Valley, CA, Nicole Kelso of Lincoln City, OR, and Amanda Uppendahl, Utah and her greatgrandson Merrick Seals of Lincoln City, OR. She also leaves behind her step-children Richard, Elizabeth, Randall and her step-grandchildren Alexander, Atticus. She also leaves behind her great host of friends Irene Robertson, Lynda Miller, Barbara Johnson, Judy Woods Knight, Wendy Manning, Bill and Carla Coleman, Pearl Tucker and so many others whose lives she touched.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at 3 pm in the chapel at Griffin Family Funeral Chapels, 101 E. Wilbur Rd. Thousand Oaks, CA.
