Letitia Alley Obituary
Letitia Elwood Brown Alley

December 10, 1916 - June 27, 2014

Letitia Elwood Brown Alley (née Goggins) died in Salem at her assisted-living residence after a long illness on June 27, 2014. She was 97 years old and under the care of hospice at that time. Letitia was born at home in Belfast, Northern Ireland on December 10, 1916, the youngest child and beloved only daughter of John and Sarah Goggins. Educated at schools in Belfast, she arrived in the United States shortly after the end of World War II. In Salem, she worked for several years as a buyer at Miller's Department Store (now the Reed Opera House). In 1949, she married Charles Howard Alley, a long-time resident of Salem and veteran who had served in World War II. They had one daughter, Patricia, born in 1951. Both Letty and Charles were loving parents who gave their daughter a wonderful childhood and a fine education in Salem-area schools. For 21 years, theirs was a happy life and marriage, until Charles's sudden death in 1970, as the result of a cerebral hemorrhage. Later, after her husband's death, Letitia worked for 23 years in the Children's Department of the Salem Public Library, where she was known for her unerring ability to find absorbing books for children and young adults. She read all the books that she recommended to others and truly loved her work at Salem's library, for so many years a cultural center of the city. A lifelong animal lover, Letty cared for many beloved pets during her long life and mourned their passing with passionate intensity. She loved her family most of all, but reading was a constant pastime, and she was an exquisite seamstress, like her mother before her. Letty was a long-time member of Westminster United Presbyterian Church in south Salem. In addition to her husband, Letty was predeceased by her father and mother, John and Sarah Goggins; her dearly loved brother John Joseph Goggins, (Joe); and her sister-in-law, Sarah (Sallie) Goggins. She will be forever missed by her daughter Patricia Alley and son-in-law Ronald Del Carlo; nephews John J. (Jack) Goggins (Daria Kansier) and Gerald D. (Gerry) Goggins; and friends, who will always remember her independent spirit, gentle ways, lifelong generosity, and her "Irish eyes," which, in the words of the song, were so often smiling. A private burial service at Belcrest Memorial Park has been arranged for Wednesday, July 2, 2014. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Willamette Humane Society at 4246 Turner Rd. SE, Salem, Oregon 97317. Arrangements by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
