George Michael Lewis
March 1, 1947 - August 13, 2014
SUBLIMITY - Mike (aka Spike), 67, formerly of Salem, died August 13 in Sublimity. He was born in Huntington, WV. Mike received his degree in Journalism from Marshall University. He worked as a wire editor for the Statesman Journal for many years; prior to this, he was employed in the news department at The Herald-Dispatch in Huntington, WV. George enjoyed photography, painting, writing stories and authored an unpublished book titled "The Blue Marlin." He enjoyed traveling, especially to Hawaii. Another one of his passions was tasting craft beers and frequented many beer festivals in Portland. Spike, as he was known by many, impacted people through his friendships and artwork. He lived his life on his own terms regardless of what others thought. Norman Rockwell had a big influence on his paintings and was reflected in a self-portrait he painted. The family extends enormous gratitude to Aaron Marvin, a dear friend and coworker at the Statesman Journal, who helped Mike cope with his many challenges over the past three years until his death. Also, the family thanks Kathy Hodges for her compassionate care of Mike's dog Junior and her commitment of taking Junior for monthly visits with Mike. He is survived by his mother: Mary Jane Lewis of Huntington, WV; brothers: Nick Lewis of Richmond, KY, Rick Lewis of Columbia, SC, and Mark Lewis of Ironton, OH; sister: Shelley Lewis of Huntington, WV. Private family services will be held at a later date. Serving the family, North Santiam Funeral Service, Stayton.
