William Cloyd Obituary
William Harrison (Harry) Cloyd, M.D.

August 11, 1920 - August 14, 2014

William Harrison "Harry" Cloyd was born in Lexington, Kentucky on August 11, 1920 to Maxine Brandenburg and Carroll Bailey Cloyd. Siblings included Lois Blinka, Ann Warner, and Ruth McKee (deceased). Harry attended high school in San Marcos, Texas, where he was president of Student Council and involved with swimming, speech, drama, and debate. He attended Southwest Texas College, majoring in pre-med.

As a senior in college when World War II started, Harry was requested to remain in pre-med studies, as doctors would be needed. He entered medical school in l942 in Galveston, Texas. After internship he spent 2 years on the medical staff in a Veterans Hospital in Kentucky. Wishing to become a medical missionary, Harry moved with his family to Belgium to study French and tropical medicine. In the Belgium Congo, he worked in a leper colony and as a surgeon. After returning to the United States he worked in tuberculosis hospitals in Kentucky. In l955, Harry moved with his family to Oregon and worked at the TB hospital in Salem. In l958 he started working at the Oregon State Hospital in forensic psychiatry and as Director of Psychiatric Services of the Oregon Division of Corrections. He supervised residents at the Clackamas County Mental Health Clinic where he met Linda Barrueco. They married in 1978. He retired in 1984.

Harry's passions included reading (primarily history), geology (especially the Grand Canyon), anthropology, and being in the outdoors. He loved Oregon and spent much time teaching his children to ski, taking them hiking and going on wonderful back-packing trips. He was a valued medical member of the Marion County Search and Rescue team. Harry derived his peace and renewal from nature. He had a love of life that was infectious, and people took an instant liking to him. He was an intelligent, compassionate, and sensitive man.

Harry is survived by wife Linda; sisters; his children Tom Cloyd, Gwyn (Ron) Marsh, Lindy Cloyd, Sally (Walter) Walker, and Bernadette (John) Stoddard; grandchildren: Nathan, Rachel, Julie, James, Peter, Sarah, and Andrew; and two great grandchildren.

Services for Harry will be on Friday, August 22, at 3pm, with a reception to follow at Howell-Edwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors in Salem.
