William Brickey Obituary

William Brickey April 16, 1937 - September 16, 2010 SALEM - William Brickey died in the early hours of Thursday, September 16th, in his residence in Salem, Oregon, with his loving wife, Margaret at his side. He was born in 1937 in Lordsburg, New Mexico, attended the University of Utah where he majored in business, was a member of ROTC, an editor of the student newspaper and played linebacker on the Utah Utes football team. He is remembered by his college friends for his wild sense of humor and his willingness to orchestrate pranks on the university campus. One such included driving cattle on horseback through the Utah campus, while another involved riding a motorcycle through the student union. After college, Mr. Brickey served his country as an airborne army ranger and a member of the Green Berets from 1961-1964. He served with the 10th Special Forces Mountain Division where among other duties he also served as an army special forces ski instructor. He took part in numerous Cold War missions in Europe and served with distinction. While stationed in Germany he met his future wife, Margaret Weaver of Twin Falls, Idaho, and the two were married in Bad Toltz, Germany, on June 8, 1963. Only three hours after he was married, then Lt. Brickey was called to duty and spent the next three weeks of his married life on a troop plane filled with Green Berets shadowing a Mercury space capsule as it orbited the Earth. He was active in the Army Reserves for many years after his honorable discharge and remained intensely proud of his military service throughout his life. He graduated from the Willamette Law School in 1967 and then practiced privately for 28 years with then law firm of Weatherford-Thompson in Albany, Oregon. While in Albany he was a member of Rotary and St. Peter's Episcopal Church. In 1995, Mr. Brickey took a position as a trial attorney for the Oregon Department of Justice and worked in the state's capital until his retirement in 2006. His awards from the State of Oregon include a Department of Justice Outstanding Service Award. He served as a judge pro-tem, was an avid golfer and a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Salem. He followed Oregon Duck's football after his son graduated from the University of Oregon. He is survived by his wife; his two children, Russell Brickey of Platteville, Wisconsin, and Amelia Liss of Salem; his two beloved granddaughters, Emily and Isabelle Liss, also of Salem; his brother, Robert Brickey; and sisters, Colleen Moss, Carol Dudding and Sue Albee. The highest value in Bill Brickey's life was to treat all people with kindness and dignity, beliefs he lived by every day of his life. He was and is well loved and will be remembered by his family for the honorable and gentle man he was in this life. Family services for William Brickey will be held at Belcrest Memorial Park, and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., September 30, 2010, for friends at St. Paul's Episcopal Church at 1444 Liberty St. SE, Salem. Those wishing to do so may send donations in lieu of flowers to the scholarship fund in his name at Willamette Law School. Arrangements by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.

I hsve not seen Bill since our East High school days back in 1955-1956.I remember as a football player Bill Brickey cared about doing his job well but he also cared and encouraged me and others to do the same. He was always lifting building his friends and team mates. My thoughts and prayers are with his wonderful wife and family today. To Bob and Jan and all family members may God comfort you at this time. Love Dave Fox, Salt Lake City, Utah

I also worked with Bill at SAIF Corporation when I first started to work in our third party division some 18 years ago, not only did Bill share his knowledge but his friendship. Bill was my buddy and I will miss him terribly.

I first met Bill in 1973 when as a young woman I went to work for Weatherford Thompson Law office. The first day on the job I called Bill Mr. Brickey and was informed that he was not his father...LOL! He was such a great guy and so great to work for. All his clients loved him and when he left to go to Salem his clients were lost. I stayed in touch with him through the years but not this past couple when he was ill and now I am so sorry that I did not. I will miss you "Mr. Brickey."

While Bill was in the private practice I had the good fortune of trying several cases where we represented separate codefendants. He was Irreverent, adventurous, forever vigilant, always impeccably ethical and a constant pleasure to be around. His word was his bond and integrity his hallmark. I confess we spent a great deal of time exchanging barbs about the relative merit of the Green Berets versus the Marines. and never settled the question although we each knew the answer and yielded no ground. Hemingway said it best " Ask not for whom the bell tolls - it tolls for thee" He cannot be replaced.

It was a privilege to work for Bill, both times he was at the DOJ. He truly was one of those rare people that genuinely cares about those around him. Bill even invited the entire office to his home for their annual holiday party one year, and made everyone feel as if his home was their own. May his family be comforted at this time in knowing they will see him again someday.
