Roger Barry Obituary
Roger Thomas Barry

September 7, 1939 - December 7, 2011

SALEM - Roger Thomas Barry passed away peacefully in his home after a lengthy illness. Roger was born September 7, 1939 in Salem, Oregon. The only son of Samuel Thomas and Gladys (Scott) Barry. Sam proclaimed his son to be quite a little corker. Thereafter he was Corky to family and friends.

Roger was a life long resident of Salem. He attended Highland Elementary, Parrish Junior High and was a 1957 graduate of North Salem High. In 1960 he married Sharon McKimmy - divorcing in 1977. Roger was a veteran of the Oregon Army National Guard serving from 1962 through 1967. In 1971 he graduated from Oregon State University with a B.S. in Business Admin. Upon graduation he went to work for the City of Corvallis.

Roger's father and his partners opened Salem Tire Service in 1940, owning and operating it until their retirement in 1973, when Roger bought the business following in his father's footsteps or as he would often say "his tire tracks." He owned and operated Salem Tire Service until 1993 when he sold the business and semi-retired. Roger was especially proud that the business was in his family for over 50 years. Roger married his beloved wife Joy Silveira Hicks in June of 1987.

Roger was a quiet man with a quick dry wit and strong ideals, he was a devoted husband and he strived to live his life according to his favorite poem "Desiderata." He loved traveling, camping in his 5th wheel, his dog Maggie, going to car shows and trudging through antique stores with his wife, Joy. Roger was a car man, he especially loved his Corvettes and had many over years. He loved them so much that in April, 2010, while still weak battling the effects of cancer, he flew to Omaha, Nebraska and drove home his last Corvette. Roger was a member of the Salem Executive Assn.; a 39 year member of the Elks and a member of Capital City Corvettes.

Roger is survived by his wife, Joy; his sister, Judy (Harley) Homan; his stepchildren, Deborah (Dan) Kloss, Scott (Michelle) Hicks; grandchildren, Alexander Hicks, Hayden Kloss, Mikayla Kloss and Austin Hicks; nephew, Barry (Julie) Branaugh; nieces, Jennifer (Mark) Hauser, Amy (Gary) Baker and in-laws, Toni (Richard) Davenport. Roger had many good friends, but his life long friend, beginning in Junior High, was Ira Feitelson, who was his friend, his attorney, his customer, who shared his love of Corvettes and was there for Roger in his triumphs and his tragedies.

Special thanks to the kindness of the Salem Hospital nurses and to Willamette Valley Hospice for helping Roger through his journey. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service in Salem.
