SALEM - Mike was born to June and Charlie Thorn in Pennsylvania in 1953 and later moved to San Jose, California, with his family as a child. He died suddenly and unexpectedly on Tuesday doing two of his favorite things, playing on the computer and drinking his coffee.
He served in the Army from ages 18 to 25 and will be interred with full Military Honors at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 16th at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt. Scott Boulevard, Portland, OR 97086.
He married Melody as a young man and they later divorced. He was then married to Linda for 17 years until she passed away in 1995.
Mike and Cherie were blessed to have met in late 1995 and then married in June 1996 in Salem, Oregon. They were best friends and kindred souls.
Mike's passions were computers, fishing, aircraft, playing the slots at Chinook Winds and his other best friend, his dog, Reggie. In 1996 and 1997 he enjoyed racing his two race cars at the Woodburn Drag Strip.
When Mike and Cherie married, their respective children, Danielle Thorn, Tyler Schilling and Devon Anderson became each other's children, too. To Cherie's children, Mike was "Pops."
Mike is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Cherie Thorn; his daughter Danielle Thorn (by his late wife, Linda); son, Tyler Schilling; daughter, Devon Anderson; grandchildren, Alexis, Quentin and Amillyana Schilling, and Veya Anderson. Also surviving him are his father, Charlie Thorn and his wife, Audrey; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Al and Gela Koester; sisters-in-law, Angie Phillips and Denise Winter; nieces, Inge Gill and Nicole Thorn; nephews, Cameron Winter, Jason Thorn, Raymond Campbell and Paul Grivjalva; great-niece, Katie Poling; and great-nephews, Brandon Campuzano and Austin Rach. Mike is also survived by his daughter Michelle (by his first wife, Melody). Mike was preceded in death by his mother, June, in 1998; his nephew, Zach Poling, in 1997; and his brother-in-law, Dave Phillips in 2003.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Salem Evangelical Church, 455 Locust Street NE, Salem, OR 97303, on Tuesday, May 15th at 3 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to share their memories of Mike with everyone. Arrangements entrusted to Keizer Funeral Chapel.
