SALEM - My beloved husband and dearest friend went home to be with our Lord and Savior in the evening of February 9, 2013. Two months ago Mike suffered a debilitating stroke but was on the mend before one last stroke. He was at peace for he had given his life to Jesus Christ almost 60 years ago. Mike was born in Oregon City but was a resident of Salem his entire life. Mike was the son of Francis W. and Betty E. Smith. Mike graduated from North Salem High School in 1959. He then went to Western Oregon College. Mike worked for Credit Bureaus, Inc. for a number of years then moved to Tacoma, WA to attend the University of Puget Sound Law School. Upon graduation he returned to Salem and was admitted to the Oregon State Bar in 1976. Mike worked as an attorney for a number of years with his father in the purchase or development of commercial buildings and spaces for lease. Later Mike opened his own law office. Mike worked with Union Gospel Mission as house council. Mike enjoyed counseling people, interacting with friends and people at church, walking, reading, travel, and trips to the Surfrider.
He was pre-deceased by his father, mother, son Derrick, and sister Betty Lou. He leaves his wife and best friend Joyce, adopted son James, faithful companion Prince, brother Frank (Frieda), nephews and nieces Brian (Val) Smith, Becki (James) Bindseil, Cathy "Sam" Dockler, David Harra, and other nephews and nieces. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Peace Lutheran Church or to Union Gospel Mission, 345 Commercial St NE, Salem, OR 97301.
A Memorial Service will be held at Peace Lutheran Church, 1525 Glen Creek Rd NW in Salem on Saturday, February 16th at 2 pm. Arrangements by Crown Memorial Center - Salem.
