Earl Sherwood

June 18, 1925 - February 21, 2013

SALEM - Earl Sherwood, beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and friend, died peacefully early Thursday morning. He was born on June 18, 1925 in Commerce, Oklahoma, and moved with his family to a farm in Salem when he was seven years old. He bought his first guitar when he was eight, beginning a lifetime of music and performance.

Throughout his life, Earl performed with many bands, and the highlight of his music career was the summer his band Earlie Lee and His Rhythm Gang spent on the Grand Ole Opry circuit, playing with Tex Ritter, Johnny Cash, June Carter, the Four Knights, and many more country stars. He passed his talents and love for music on to everyone in his family, and had great fun at regular family jam sessions in recent years.

In 1946, Earl walked into the Salem Fire Department and asked about a job. He spent nearly 35 years working for the Fire Department, most of that time as Captain. While he loved his work, his music, and other hobbies like bowling and building houses, Earl's one true love was his wife, Vi. They were married on Christmas day, 1944, and celebrated 63 wonderful years together before Vi's death in 2008. They are survived by their three children, Cindy Myers and her husband Chris, Randal Sherwood and his wife Angela, and Ron Sherwood and his wife Zola. Earl adored his grandchildren, McKenzie Myers and his wife Meg, and Alec McCulloch. No one loved being a Grampa more than Earl, and all of his family will cherish fond memories of his loving devotion to his children and grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Kingwood Bible Church at 2pm on Tuesday. Arrangements by Howell-Edwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors. To leave audio or online condolences please visit www.HED-FH.com.
