Kathryn Frances Bruce Lutes|
August 9, 1920 - June 23, 2013
KEIZER - Kathryn Frances Bruce Lutes, age 92, died peacefully on Sunday afternoon, June 23, at Willamette Lutheran Retirement Community in Keizer. With her when she died were her husband of 73 years, her son and two daughters.
A public memorial service will be held in Grace Chapel of the retirement home at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 30.
Kathryn was born August 9, 1920, and spent her childhood and adolescence in Sioux City, Iowa. She was the daughter of Frank and Lida Bruce. She met her future husband at Park College in Parkville, Missouri. The two spent decades in education, she as an elementary schoolteacher and later, a school counselor. Mid-career, she earned a master's degree from Oregon State University.
After retirement, she volunteered at Salem Public Library for 20 years. She and her husband, interested in other cultures, traveled to a number of countries, including Egypt, Israel, Malaysia, Japan, and Scotland.
Throughout her life, Kathryn showed compassion for helping others, an interest in learning, a devotion to family, and an openness and acceptance of change - she used her iPad, for example, to maintain her Facebook account. When the couple moved to Willamette Lutheran seven years ago, Kathryn, as usual, became involved, working in the library and becoming president of the residents association. She regularly visited the frail elderly who live in the retirement home's Grace Center, where she herself eventually lived and where she died.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Lutes; son David Lutes and daughter-in-law Gina Lutes; daughter Sally Cheriel and son-in-law Chad Cheriel, daughter Susan Hillway and son-in-law Chan Hillway; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
