The Reverend Edwin T. Shackelford, III
September 7, 1928 - July 16, 2013
The Reverend Edwin T. Shackelford, III, retired priest of the Episcopal Church, died July 16th at his home in Salem, Oregon. He and his wife Sally had been residents of Salem since 1992.
Father Shackelford was born and grew up in Colonial Heights, Virginia. He was a veteran of World War II, the Berlin Airlift and the Korean Conflict and had served as an advisor to the Nationalist Chinese Air Force. Shackelford received his B.A. in Economics and Business Administration magna cum laude, from Park University in Kansas City, MO. Following his Military service he was a career employee of the Department of Defense until he resigned his position as Chief of Programs and Budget, Ft. Benning, Georgia to attend and graduate from the Episcopal Theological Seminary in Kentucky, where he earned his Master of Divinity degree.
During his active ministry Fr. Shackelford served as Rector and Vicar of Episcopal churches in the San Joaquin Valley and Northern California. After retirement he served as Priest in Charge of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Woodburn, and supply priest at various churches in the Diocese of Oregon.
He is survived by his wife, Sally R. Shackelford, stepson Michael Scott Helm, stepdaughters Margaret Duell, Debra Cruz, and Kathy Moser, all of Salem; and ten grandchildren. His wisdom, wit and loving kindness will be missed by all who knew him.
Fr. Shackelford donated his body to the Oregon Health Sciences University.
A Requiem Holy Eucharist will be celebrated in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Salem on August 17th at 1:00pm with the Rt. Rev. Michael Hanley officiating.
