Jane Elizabeth Crugar Haenisch

September 10, 1913 - August 11, 2013

Jane Elizabeth Crugar Haenisch died at home on August 11, 2013, in Salem, Oregon, just one month shy of her 100th birthday.

Born September 10, 1913, in Chicago, she attended Northwestern University and the University of Grenoble, and taught French following graduation.

She married Edward Lauth Haenish in 1941. They soon settled in Crawfordsville, Indiana, where Ed held a professorship at Wabash College and Jane continued a lifelong commitment to volunteerism. She lived in Crawfordsville for forty years before joining her family in Salem, Oregon in 1984. She moved to the Capitol Manor retirement community in 1996; her family deeply appreciates the care shown to her by the Manor Care staff in recent years.

Never content to stop learning, she combined spirited opinions with an eager pursuit of new knowledge and experiences, particularly evident in her travels across the globe. She not only took up a yoga practice in her 50s, but went on to be yoga instructor herself.

One who held history and genealogy in esteem, her memberships included Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames of America, First Families of Virginia, Magna Charta Dames, Huguenot Society, and American Association of University Women. She attended First Presbyterian Church of Salem, Oregon.

She was preceded in death by her son Edward Lee Haenisch in 1948 and her husband in 1977. Survivors include daughter Elizabeth (Don) Oswalt of Salem, Oregon, grandchildren Trevor (Karina) Oswalt of Portland, Oregon, and Heather (Tom) Stricklin of Salem, Oregon, and three great-grandchildren, Caleb, Lucia, and Evers.

At her request, there will be no public visitation or service. Her family will have a private gathering and graveside service in Chicago. Memorial contributions to be made in lieu of flowers to the Edward L. Haenisch Memorial Fund, c/o Wabash College, 301 W. Wabash Ave., Crawfordsville, IN 47933.
