SALEM - Alan H. Hershey died at home in his sleep Saturday from complications of multiple sclerosis. Alan was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Anne and Lloyd Hershey. The family moved to Elmhurst, Illinois, where Alan attended grade school, then to Short Hills, New Jersey, where he attended middle school. In 1954 the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona where Alan graduated high school.

Alan attended the University of Arizona in Tucson where he earned a B.S. degree in comparative government and an M.P.A. degree in public administration. While in graduate school he met and married his wife of 51 years, Laurie.

After graduation Alan devoted his life to public service. He worked five years for the City of Tucson Community Development Department, and the family grew to include three daughters. The family moved to Salem, Oregon, in 1970 where Alan directed business functions at the Mid-Willamette Valley Council of Governments for eight years and served as Director for sixteen years. He was a member of the International City Management Association, and National and Northwest Associations of Regional Councils. He retired in 1996 due to poor health.

Alan was a member of Salem Rotary Club for 35 years. He particularly enjoyed helping with the club's major projects. He chaired the auction committee in 1984, chaired the International Student Exchange Program for several years in the 1980s and chaired and served on the Good Works well into retirement. He was given life membership for his service in 2005.

Alan is survived by his wife, Laurie, daughters Heather, Blythe (husband David) and Holly (husband Robert), granddaughters Bailey and Keira, sisters Carol, Mary and Margaret, his aunt Harriet and five nieces.
