John Arthur Kocan

July 24, 1926 - September 15, 2013

Born in Oak Park (Chicago) ILL to Czech immigrant parents; John and Marie (Levy) Kocan. His father died during the depression leaving his mother, himself, younger brother Charles, and older sister Marion to survive that hard time. John and his family were active members of the SOKOL in Chicago, a Czech gymnastic organization. He joined the army during WWII where he served in the Philippines and Japan as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne. He met and married Carol Aileen LeFever Kocan, his bride of 62 years. They had four children Becky, Brad, Lori-deceased, and John. John and Carol moved the family from Chicago to Turner Oregon in 1962. Where then built their dream home and became leaders in the community of Cloverdale, and Cascade schools. He loved Barbershop music and was a member and leader of the SPEBSQSA Downers Grove ILL, Salem, and Bend, OR chapters for 60 years. John is survived by his wife Carol, children Becky (Rick Dewar), Brad (Deana), and John (Cherie), brother Charles, 8 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, his brother in law Frank Polz, sister in-laws Phyllis, and June, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Marion, Daughter Lori, and granddaughters Jennifer and Heather. Thank you to Johns devoted caregivers, Cathie, Betty, Ella, Sylvia, and others for their loving kindness. A celebration of Life will be held on Oct. 5 @ 2:00, Silver Creek falls North Falls Meeting Hall, NO PETS ALLOWED.Contributions in Johns memory may be made to SPEBSQSA, High desert museum in Bend, or Wildlife federation.
