Orville N. Roth
July 2, 1934 - October 13, 2013
Orville N. Roth, Willamette Valley business, civic, and philanthropic leader, passed away on October 13, while visiting family in Honolulu, Hawaii. His son, Michael, and daughter, Melinda, were at his side.
Born July 2, 1934 in Elgin, North Dakota, Orville was one of four children of Matilda and Albert Roth. Orville was 10 years old when his father died, and his mother moved her children to Salem, Oregon. Orville is a graduate of North Salem High School (class of '52), attended Willamette University in Salem and was in the US Army.
At age 16, Orville started in the grocery business and wore his first green bow tie while working at Erickson's Grocery; nine years later, while only 25, he was named the store manager. In 1962, Orville and Herman Jochimsen opened Roth's IGA Foodliner in Silverton. Orville's tireless work ethic and total commitment to customer service made the store a success, and today there are nine Roth's Fresh Markets in the Willamette Valley.
Orville strongly believed in giving back to the community. Roth's Fresh Markets and the Roth Family Foundation have made countless donations to non-profits and worthy organizations throughout the Willamette Valley. Especially close to Orville's heart were The Oregon Garden in Silverton and Special Olympics Oregon.
Orville is survived by his sister, Arlene Wiege, and his brothers, Wally and Roger Roth; his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Leslie Roth, and their children Dan, Jason, Alex and Alyssa; daughter, Melinda Roth and her son, Aidan; longtime companion Verlene Beard and her family and thousands of employees past and present who he treated with respect and compassion and who regarded him as a mentor.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, October 22nd, at 2:00 pm at The Oregon Garden. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to: Special Olympics Oregon, Doernbecher Children's Hospital, Family Building Blocks or the
in Orville's name.
