Virginia Lee Seamster|
June 12, 1919 - November 5, 2013
SALEM - Virginia (Knight) Seamster was born in Richmond, Virginia on June 12, 1919. She passed away at age 94 in Salem, Oregon on November 5, 2013. Her parents were Benjamin Knight, career Naval Officer, and Minnie Knight (nee D'carrico). Virginia spent most of her school-age years in San Diego, but when her father was transferred she moved with her parents to the small town of Hilton, VA outside of Newport News. She graduated from Hilton's Morrison High School in 1936. Virginia went on to earn a music-teaching diploma from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA.
After moving to Salem, Oregon in 1942, Virginia served the community as a caseworker for ten years with Marion County Public Welfare. She married Forest W. "Bus" Seamster on September 19, 1947. Her husband's death in 1962 left Virginia a widow with two young sons, John and Bill. After raising her sons and seeing each of them earn their respective college degrees, Virginia entered the workforce again giving private piano lessons and working for the Willamette Lutheran Retirement Community.
Virginia was an active member of Salem's First Baptist Church for over sixty years. Virginia loved music, playing the piano, gardening, reading, outings with friends, and family get-togethers. She served as a pianist for a number of organizations well into her 80s.
In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her husband Forest "Bus" Seamster and her son John Seamster who passed away in 1993. Her son Bill Seamster of Salem, Oregon survives her. Virginia also leaves friends and Salem-area cousins who will dearly miss her sweet spirit.
Private interment will be at Belcrest Memorial Park. Friends and family are invited to a memorial service on Monday, November 11, 2013 at 1:30 PM at the First Baptist Church, 395 Marion Street, Salem, OR 97301. Memorial donations may also be made to the Salem First Baptist Church. Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service is handing arrangements.
