DALLAS - Bryan Murray of Dallas died January 2, 2014 in Salem, Oregon, of acute myeloid leukemia.

He was born Novemeber 17, 1952, in San Antonio, Texas, to William G. and Nellie M. Murray, the eldest of three brothers. The family moved to Kentucky and then to Santa Clara and later San Jose, California, where Bryan attended Pioneer High School, graduating in 1970. He attended San Jose State University, graduating in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in journalism. He received a master's degree from Willamette University in 2000. He married Karen Shaughnessy in 1986 in Salem. Their son, Angus, was born in 1989 in Melbourne, Australia.

Bryan worked as a television news reporter, anchorman and producer for 23 years at NBC, CBS and PBS affiliates in Alaska and Oregon, and at the National Nine Network in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, Australia. Following his two decades in broadcast news, he spent several years as a teacher in Salem. He also worked as a freelance writer for the Oregonian. He retired in 2003. In 1993, he built the six-sided house in Dallas where he lived with his family until his death.

Bryan loved the outdoors, in particular the wildlife refuges and parks of the Willamette Valley, and the rivers and beaches of the Oregon Coast. He was a boat enthusiast, living aboard a sailboat for a year in Brisbane, and later hand-building a wooden kayak which he paddled on Oregon coastal rivers and estuaries. He loved going for runs and hikes in the hills. He and Karen especially enjoyed taking very long walks and drives together. In addition to his family, he loved his dog, his Chevy truck, his mountain bike and his wooden kayak. He was active and athletic all his life. He was a student of religion and politics, a passionate Democrat and a union supporter. He loved to talk about politics and personalities, and he was a very funny and engaging companion.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Karen Murray; their son, Angus Murray; and his mother, Nellie Murray, all of Dallas; his brother, Michael Murray, of Sherwood, OR; and his uncle, Denver Murray, of Manchester, KY.
