October 30, 1919 - January 30, 2014
In the quiet morning of January 30, Frances Rasmussen gently slipped the surly bonds of earth and touched the face of God. She was 94 years old.
Born Frances Evelyn Halvorson on October 30, 1919, she was the 6th of 9 children born to Nels and Clara Halvorson of Nelson County, North Dakota.
Her rambunctious, joyous and hard-working spirit was evident from the very start, being a precocious child growing up in a large, bustling farm family that truly lived off the land in the hard years of the Depression.
She was forever a Norwegian farmers' daughter and an athletic and creative "doer" who led a non-stop and vibrant life of the housewife of an impeccably kept and well-fed household while engaged in a wide variety of activities.
She starred with her closest sister Gladyce on the Tolna (ND) High School girls' basketball squad before graduating in 1938. In ensuing years, and throughout her life, she was a cherished member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, many bowling leagues as well as garden and book clubs. In later years, she added golf and bridge to her very active and healthy life.
In 1940, she married Carl Rasmussen of Devils Lake, North Dakota, and they set up households in Devils Lake, moving to Fargo in 1958, and then to Spokane Washington in 1961. Four years after Carl passed in 1987 she moved to Salem Oregon to be near her family, and spent 23 wonderful years there enjoying many new friends, golf, bridge, her always-impressive gardens, and of course her daughter, son-in-law, grandkids and ultimately, great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling; especially her many trips visiting her son in Hawaii.
She is survived by her remaining sibling, Shirley Daffern of Anchorage, Alaska; children Susan Owens (Chris) of Salem and Jon Rasmussen of Honolulu; grandchildren Jennifer Owens Foster (Eric) of Salem and Michael Owens of Portland, and great-grandchildren Lauren and Julia of Salem.
Her husband Carl was a railroad man, and Frances always enjoyed "riding the rails" back to her beloved North Dakota to visit family and friends. Her family will join her on her last ride as she takes the train from Salem to Spokane to be interred next to Carl.
Gifts in her memory can be sent to Gentiva Hospice at 2925 River Road S., Suite 100, Salem, OR 97302, who provided Frances with one of her final blessings in a long life filled with many. Arrangements are by City View Funeral Home
She is dearly missed.
