May 31, 1927 - March 7, 2014

Gwen was born on the family farm in Clyde, N. Dakota to Joseph and Margaret Helten, where she lived until the family moved to Salem in 1943. She married John Kessel June 14, 1945 and they had three sons, Bill, Richard, (Mary) and Don (Joyce).

Gwen was always busy, she was a Cub Scout Den Mother, belonged to the CDA, Altar Society and many other committees at church. She loved history and volunteered at the Marion Co. Historical Society, mapping old cemeteries. Among her hobbies were knitting, crocheting and sewing. She loved to travel and had been to most of the states and abroad. After the boys were older she went to work for Salem Keizer School and worked there until retirement. Gwen enjoyed her crossword puzzles daily and could always help out if you got stuck. She also loved dancing and playing cards with her family and friends.

Gwen is survived by her sons, sisters Marcie Bangert, Lois Meyer, Francie Witteman, Charlotte Fletchall, Judy Lovell,Bobbie Gordon and Vickie Seber-Wiltsey, 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister Joy,parents, husband and grandson John(JR)

Rosary will be at 10:30 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM at St. Vincent's Church 1010 Columbia St NE on Friday March 14, 2014 luncheon to follow.
