Allen McRae Obituary

Allen A. McRae

July 28, 1921 - December 5, 2014

Allen passed away at age 93 at Willamette Lutheran Retirement Community. Allen was born in El Reno, Oklahoma to parents David and Cleo McRae. When Allen was 4 years old his parents moved to Salem, Oregon. In 1939 Allen graduated from Salem High School. That year Salem High School, with Allen "Big Al" as their center won the State basketball championship. He attended Willamette University. In 1941 Allen enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was a navigator and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska.

Allen's love for flying never stopped. He had his instructor's license until his mid 80's. He taught many people how to fly. Allen was an insurance adjuster for State Farm, retiring in 1982. For over 20 years Allen and Margaret spent their winters in Indio California.

On March 7, 1942 Allen married Margaret Schifferer in Riverside, California. Survivors include his wife of 72 years, four grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Jeffrey, Brother David and Sister Helen. At his request no services are planned. Memorials are suggested to the Union Gospel Mission in Salem, in care of Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.

When I was six, Al took me and father up in a Maroon Cessna (I think) during some festival at the Salem airport. I was hooked the moment we left the ground! I credit Al in providing the flight that gave me a life-long dream to fly. I never have earned my pilot's license, but I want to thank Al for planting that seed. I will never forget him.

We will miss Big Al very much. We always enjoyed beeing with him and Margaret when we visited Salem. Fare well Big Al
