Alice DeGroot Obituary
April 5, 1937 - September 10, 2017
Salem - Alice Marie (Standley) DeGroot of Salem OR passed away at the age of 80 on September 10, 2017.
She was the youngest of five girls born to George and Annie Standley. She was born at home on April 5, 1937 during the depression years. Alice lived her entire life in Salem, OR. She was part of the first graduation class of South Salem High School in 1955.
She was employed for 23 years at the Oregon State Department of Revenue. Retiring in September 1979 to travel with her first husband Arthur Meola.
Alice had many hobbies including stained glass, gardening, sewing and playing with her cats. Her passion for music was the biggest part of her life. She spent several years being a soloist for various churches and was in a variety of musical productions.
She is survived by her husband Richard De Groot; sisters Cherri Gregory, Vida Gregory and Patricia McGarvey; Step daughter Heidi Mellema; Nieces and nephews Carroll Kamlin, Dr. Kenton Gregory, Dr. Paul Gregory, Dr. Jay Gregory, Timothy Gregory and Lauren Levinson; Great nieces and nephews Emily Downing-Moore, Brian Downing, Brandon Gregory, Grant Gregory, Jason Gregory, Ryan Gregory, Mary Levinson and Samuel Levinson; and great-great-niece and -nephews Gideon Moore, Lilly Downing and Jude Downing.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents George and Annie Standley and sister, Lynne Sipe.
Her father always encouraged his girls to do anything that they wanted. He told them that women should have as much independence as men. Thank heavens for our fathers wisdom.
Memorial services for Alice will be held on Monday, September 18th at 11am at City View Funeral Home, 390 Hoyt St S. Salem, OR 97302
