Marjorie Gibbs Obituary

Marjorie Gibbs STATESVILLE Marjorie Compton Gibbs of Troutman departed this life Tuesday, March 15, 2011 to her eternal rest in heaven. She was born on November 13, 1927 to the late Edgar Daniel Compton and Vera Troutman Compton. She graduated with honors from Troutman High School. She married the love of her life, Joe Ben Gibbs and that love continued even after his death three years ago. Family was first and foremost in everything Marjorie did. She would always pull the family out of trouble, pulling them together through the generations. Having married Joe Ben, she had found a partner equal in her commitment to family and doing the right thing, even if it meant some people sleeping on the couch, eating at card tables, and adding more beans and potatoes to the pot. The sacrifices she made for her family, even though she didn't consider them a sacrifice, are numerous. They began at the age of 14 where she drove her father to the hospital for cancer treatment and administered his shots, even taking him fishing afterwards. While on her honeymoon, her mother had a heart attack and the short of a long story is that she became the caregiver for mother, and younger brother and sister, who both graduated college with graduate degrees and enjoyed successful careers. She grew up poor during the Depression, but always showed a non pretentious dignity that continued until her death. In March of 1953, Marjorie and Joe Ben expanded the family to include their 1st child, Joe Ben Gibbs, Jr who became Joey to the family and community. 3 ½ years later her first daughter Cynthia Diane was born, and 3 ½ years after that she completed her immediate family with the birth of Michael Dean. Her support and devotion to her family preceded anything else in her life. Over the past 29 years, the family expanded with the addition of 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She was truly enjoying the results of the earlier sacrifices she made. Marjorie is survived by her two sons, Joe Ben Gibbs, Jr. (Cathy) of Davidson and Michael Dean Gibbs (Ginger) of Concord; a daughter Cynthia Gibbs Beason (Ted) of Hickory; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services celebrating the life of Marjorie Gibbs will be held at 11 a.m. today at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Troutman with the Rev. Matthew Miller and Vicar Diane Bowker officiating. Burial will follow in the Troutman Historical Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 308, Troutman, NC 28166 or the Gordon Hospice House, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC. 28625. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.troutmanfuneralhome.com. I am very sorry about your mom's passing. I have many memories of her from my childhood. I remember playing at your house and your mom always being so attentive. I also have the beautiful Christmas ornaments she made for me in the 1980s. They are some of my favorites. She was such a good friend to my mother, and I can never express how fortunate Mother was to have a friend such as your mom.
I'm sorry I didn't get to the services, but my thoughts were with you. So sorry for your loss.

Joey, Mike, Cindy, I just wanted to say how sorry I was to hear about your mother. Both she and your daddy were special friends for many years, especially when I lived on N. Ave. They were always there when I needed them! I know you all have precious memories of them both and that can never be taken away. May God's peace comfort you and your families in the days to come.

To Joey, Cindy, and Mike,
I loved your mother. She was so much fun. I am so glad I got have lunch and a long conversation with her last fall. We looked at and talked and laughed about the old pictures she had carefully cataloged. You think you have all the time in the world to do it again. I know you will miss her very much. Sincerely and with love, Margaret Rumple McNeely

Cousin, neighbor and friend. And now she is home. One of the greatest blessings of being part of the Troutman family is this rare and treasured kinship. I adored Margie from childhood and cherished her example. Cindy, Joey and Mike, you had a mother that loved you very much and she knew how much you loved her. In the coming days the tears will turn slowly to smiles as you hold fast to memories and realize there will be other homecomings. I loved her very much and like so many that have gone before her from this great family, she taught me, like others to "Listen to the Song of Life". Peace and prayers to each of you. You are loved!
