Nicky Pennell STATESVILLE Nicky Pennell passed away Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, while at home. He was surrounded by his family, loved ones, and most importantly, God's spirit. Nick battled ALS for four years. Nick was born Dec. 19, 1969 in Hickory. He was the son of the late Flake Pennell and Peggy Pennell, who presently resides in Taylorsville. He grew up and attended schools in Clanton, Ala., where he was still close and kept in contact with many friends. On Sept. 14, 2002, Nick married Myra Whitaker Pennell, who survives. In addition, Nick is survived by two step-children, Daniel McGinnis (Denise), of Statesville and Kayla McGinnis Askins (Chad), of Vicenza, Italy. Also surviving are two step-grandchildren, Heaven Osborne, of Thomasville and Paxton McGinnis, of Statesville. Lastly, one brother, Thomas Pennell (Jennifer), and two nieces, Lauren and Rachell Pennell, who reside in Macon, Ga. There are many great-nieces and nephews who were dear to his heart and brought him much joy. Nick was a member of Landmark Church of God, where he was a faithful member of the choir due to his great love of music. Nick was a retired letter carrier for the USPS after 16 years of service. The last 14 years were for the city of Statesville. Nick loved being a mailman and enjoyed all the friends he made while on his route, as well as his co-workers. Nick felt that God had given him a ministry to not just deliver the mail, but a smile and encouragement along the way. All the doctors and nurses of the Veterans Hospital in Salisbury as well as the Bayada nurses became great friends and Nick was very thankful for the great care they provided along with his wife. Funeral services for Nicky Pennell will he held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, at Landmark Church of God, with the Revs. Kenneth Hudson, Ben Black and John Miles officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening (Saturday, Oct. 27), from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Landmark Church of God. Full military rites will be accorded at the graveside by the Iredell County Veterans Council. For those who prefer, memorials may be given to The ALS Association Jim "Catfish" Hunter Chapter, 120 Penmarc Dr., Suite 101, Raleigh, NC 27603, or to Landmark Church of God Sanctuary Choir, 2200 E.
