Donald Verne Wilbur, 87, passed away May 19, 2013, at The Bailey Center following complications from a stroke. "Mike," as he was called by family and friends, was born in Middletown, N.Y., and moved to Gainesville, Fla., in 1948 with his wife, Eleanor, to pursue their studies at the University of Florida. They settled in St. Augustine, Fla., in 1956 where they raised their family.
Mike had a long and distinguished military career, retiring as a colonel with Selective Service, United States Army, in 1984.
He and his wife, Eleanor, married in 1948 and raised five children. Mike was active in many civic and community organizations, including the YMCA, Kiwanis, Rotary, and Elks. For many years, he enjoyed fishing and playing golf with his many friends.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia, and his son, Thomas. He is survived by his loving wife, Eleanor, and children, Terry ("Tudy") Wilbur; Michele Mathews and her husband, Frank; Michael Wilbur; his grandchildren, Stacy Brown and her husband, Tim; Brendan Sevetz; Kellie Degarmo and her husband, Roman; Christopher Mathews; Joshua Mathews; Sean Mathews; and Jonathan Wilbur; great-grandchildren, Devin, Mason, Jake, Melanie, and Trent;
The family will receive visitors from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 2013, at Craig Funeral Home, 2600 Old Moultrie Road, St. Augustine, Fla., with a celebration of his life to begin at 11 a.m.
