James S. "Jim" Burns

James S. "Jim" Burns, 87, of St. Augustine, passed away on Feb. 6, 2013, at the Bailey Center for Caring, surrounded by his family.

Jim was a native and longtime resident of the Pittsburgh, Pa., area and served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. His service in the army included using heavy artillery weapons and participating in the Battle of the Bulge. While living in Pittsburgh, Jim enjoyed a long career in real estate as a broker and in the areas of home improvement and sales development. His greatest past-times were riding his bicycle and playing tennis. Every year on his birthday up until the age of 72, Jim would take a bike ride that would equal his age plus one mile. Jim relocated from Bethel Park, Pa., to St. Augustine in 1993. He was a long-time member of the St. Augustine Lions Club, a Melvin Jones Fellow, a lifetime member of LCI, and a Grand Lion at the Florida Lions Foundation for the Blind. He was instrumental in managing the Lions Club Eye Screening, Eye Surgery Assistance and Eyeglass Subsidy Programs for many years. Jim was also a longtime volunteer for the United Way and a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Daniel and Ronald Burns, and by a grandson, Floyd Burns.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Nancy; a son, Bill Burns, and his fiancee", Michelle, of Beaver Falls, Pa.; sisters, Ethel Schrecengost of Cranberry Township, Pa., and Carol Styslinger of Gaithersburg, Md.; a brother, Richard Burns, and his wife, Phyllis, of Upper St. Clair, Pa.; his grandchildren, Becky, Audra, Wesley and George Burns; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, at St. Johns Family Funeral Home, with Dick Talbert, officiating. A visitation, beginning at 2 p.m., will precede the service. Interment will take place at a later date at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
