Jeanne Elizabeth Mondou of St. Augustine, Fla., (formerly of Clio, Mich.), 72, passed away at her home on Jan. 20, 2012. She was the daughter of Glenwood and Leona Farrish. Jeanne grew up in Flint, Mich.
She graduated from the University of Michigan where she earned bachelor"s and master"s degrees. Jeanne began teaching at Durant Turri Mott School in Flint, where she was a swim instructor for special-needs children. She developed a swimming program for infants called "aqua tots." She taught swimming during summers to hundreds of children in the Clio area. She was a dedicated educator for more than 25 years. Jeanne was employed by the Genesee Intermediate School District until her retirement as a teacher consultant for physically impaired students in 1998.
When Jeanne retired to the St. Augustine area she remained active in the education of special education students by serving as a volunteer at Webster Elementary School. Jeanne"s passion in life was helping others, by giving of her time, her money, and her heart. Jeanne was an active member of many charitable organizations and served on the boards of the Physically Impaired Adults of Michigan, the Michigan Easter Seals, and the Genesee County Chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children.
Jeanne is survived by her husband of 49 years, Leon Mondou; their daughters, Amy (Anders) Runevad of London, England, and Martha (Richard) McDermott, of Indianapolis, Ind.; and her precious grandchildren, Eric and Emma Runevad and Leah McDermott. She was also known as "Grandma Jeanne" to numerous other children, especially, Kara, Kelsey and Keri Manor. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Kathleen Weir.
Funeral services will be held in Davison, Mich.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to her favorite charities, Easter Seals and the Council for Exceptional Children.
