Paul Daniel Gallagher, 68, of St. Augustine, passed away on July 30, 2013, at his residence surrounded by his family.
Paul was born and grew up in Hazleton, Pa., one of eight children born to Joe and Jean Gallagher. He was a 1962 graduate of West Hazleton High School and was a graduate of Penn State University where he received a bachelor degree in psychology. He continued his education at Florida State University where he earned a master"s degree and Ph.D. in education research and statistics. His commitment to education led Paul to join the administration of Florida International University in 1971. He helped develop the campus in Miami and was instrumental in opening the School of Medicine and the school"s football program. He retired in 2006, but continued in a consulting role in the School of Business development program for school principals. Paul was a devoted husband, father, brother and friend and will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Jo Gallagher of St. Augustine; a daughter, Jennifer Jo Gallagher Rau, and her husband, Nick, of Harrison, Va.; sisters, Louise Volciak of West Hazleton, Pa, Mary Ellen Rubright and her husband, Vernon, of Lititz, Pa., and Catherine "Kate" Paulick and her husband, Stephen, of Orwigsburg, Pa.; brothers, Joseph Gallagher and his wife, Jane, of Selinsgrove, Pa., William Gallagher and his wife, Nancy, of Valley View, Pa., and Michael Gallagher and his wife, Claudia, of St. Louis, Mo,; many nieces and nephews, and his chocolate Labrador Retriever, Mocha. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Jean Gallagher, and a brother, James Gallagher.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Hazleton, Pa., and Miami, Fla. St. Johns Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
