David P. "Dave" Smead

David P. "Dave" Smead, age 94, of St. Augustine, passed away on May 24, 2014, at the Bailey Family Center for Caring, surrounded by his family. Born and raised in Painesville, Ohio, Dave graduated from Thomas W. Harvey High School, Class of 1938. He went on to graduate from Miami University in Ohio, with a bachelors degree, before serving his country as a Naval Aviator in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Dave owned and operated Smead Realty Company in Painesville, Ohio, for more than 50 years. He was a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Painesville, and belonged to the Elks Club and First Church Congregational in Painesville, relocating to St. Augustine just four years ago. Above all, he was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and he will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mayzie Smead of St. Augustine; sons, David Smead, and Dan Smead and wife, Diana, all of Tennessee; daughters, Marianne Savarda and husband, James, of Colorado, and Connie Torkar and husband, Robert, of St. Augustine; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Bessie Smead, and a brother, James Smead.

Services will be held in Painesville, Ohio, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in David's memory can be made to: Bailey Family Center for Caring, c/o Community Hospice of NE FL, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257.
