Jerome "Sonny" Gamsey, 93½, was born July 21, 1920, in St. Augustine.

Sonny came into the final station of his tranquil destination on March 3, 2014, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, David and Karen, where he had lived and was cared about for oodles of years.

He attended the University of Florida for a short time before the beginning of World War II, during which he became a supply sergeant in the European theater.

After the war, Sonny became an eclectic entrepreneur that included along his life's trek a wholesale grocery warehouse, several package stores, a number of early St. Augustine laundromats, a bit of a restaurateur, small chain of video stores in Northeast Florida, and later, a house painting enterprise.

All his endeavors along the way were accented by a very service-oriented mentality.

His most enduring hobby for many decades was Sonny-crafted and hand-carved wooden "name plate" creations that were personal to a "T" for a rather large population of his family, friends and acquaintances that were well received by his many fans and recipients, in the thousands.

Sonny was definitely a Gator sports teams aficionado - galore.

He was the child of Fannie and Abe Gamsey, and he also had a sister, Myra Hoffenberg (Seymore) - both deceased.

Sonny is survived by the mother of their children, Pearl Wohl Gamsey.

He is survived by his three sons, David Gamsey (Karen), Stuart Gamsey and Elliott Gamsey; his three daughters, Cheryl Rose Richards (Gary), Laura Jane Herman (Richard) and Toba Lynn Culbreth (Charlie).

He's also survived by his grandchildren, Shauna, Hannah (Robert), Kelley (Kristin), Carey, Erin (Zach), Sage, Lorae, Rachel, Josh, Chloe and Harrison; and his two great-grandchildren, Owen and Ryan; his nephew, Mark Hoffenberg; and his nieces, Janice Hoffenberg, Ava Axelrod; as well as Nancy Gamsey, the Gosai family, Dee Buchanan, Julie Harvey and Margie Godby, truly his close friends.

Sonny is also survived by his loyal companions, "Izzy the Meow" and Sasha (deceased) and Reilly "the Bow Wows."

As to your nice memories of Sonny, plant a lovely, colorful flower in your backyard or alternatively "plant" an appropriate one in your particularly wonderful mind.

Grave side services will be at 10 a.m. Sunday at Congregation Sons of Israel Cemetery.
