Jim Barrett of Cascades, St. Augustine, died from melanoma Jan. 26, 2014, at the Bailey Center for Caring at 83. His volunteer activities service at Glenmoor Community Nursing Home over the last six years led to his recognition as Volunteer of the Year in 2013 by the Florida Health Care Activities Coordinators Association. Jim was a Friend of the Library and sports enthusiast whose interests were poker, theater and travel.
He attended Muhlenberg College in his hometown of Allentown, Pa., before joining the U.S. Army, where he was posted to Germany. Jim enjoyed a long career in business before retiring as president of Applied Learning Corporation of Wayne, Pa., in 2006.
He is survived by his seven children: Michael Barrett and Patty of St. Augustine; Patricia Barrett of Ponte Vedra; Jane McNeely of Tampa; James "Jay" Barrett III and Sue Prater of Morehead, Ky.; Timothy Barrett of San Carlos, Calif.; Steven Barrett of Middletown, N.J.; and Christopher and Robin Barrett of Talent, Ore.; five grandchildren, Laura Elizabeth and James Patrick Barrett of Lexington, Ky.; Austin Michael Barrett of St. Augustine; Patricia Lea Barrett of Boise, Idaho; Sabrina Jacqueline Barrett of Middletown, N.J.; his sisters, Carol Hertle (Helmut) of Jacksonville; Dorothy Barbour of St. Augustine; and sisters-in-law, Janice Donovan of Peabody, Mass.; Mary Jane Barrett of Dallas; and nine nephews and nieces.
Jim was preceded in death by two wives: Patricia Stack in 1963 and Gisela Hillesheim in 2003; his parents, James and Edna Holland Barrett; and his brothers Gene and Jackie. His passion for life and compassion for others will be missed by all who knew him.
A celebration of Jim's life will be held for all his family and friends at the Cascades Clubhouse, World Golf Village from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 15, 2014.
