Engelbert "Bert" Dobbertin Sr., passed from this life on May 31, 2014, at the Bailey Center for Caring with his family by his side. He was 90 years old. Bert was born in Rochester, N.Y., in 1924. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific.

After the war, he was discharged with honor and married the love of his life, Gloria Robinson, in 1946. He worked in the insurance business and was co-owner of Geneva Adjustment Service in Geneva, N.Y., where he and Gloria raised their family. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer and a great father to his two children. After he fully retired in 1994, he and Gloria moved to St. Augustine to be near his children. He was a member of the Geneva Country Club in Geneva, N.Y., and a member of the VFW in both New York and St. Augustine Post 2391 where he served as chaplain from 2011 to 2012. In this capacity he traveled to the St. Augustine nursing homes and prayed with the veterans individually every month.

He was predeceased by his loving wife Gloria in 2008. He is survived by his daughter, Colleen (Pete) Borzilleri of Fredonia, N.Y., and St. Augustine, Fla.; and his son, Engelbert "Bud" (Marie) Dobbertin Jr. of St. Augustine; four grandsons; one granddaughter and two great-grandsons.

A memorial celebration of his life with military honors will be held at Craig Funeral Home in St. Augustine, at 6:30 p.m. June 24, 2014.
