Deacon James "Toby" "Pie Man" Hunter, 89, of Hastings began his eternal life Jan, 4, 2017, at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine. A native of Merritt, North Carolina, and resident of Hastings for numerous years, the son of the late Prince A. and Cassandra C. Hunter, educated in the Merritt School system and continued his studies with Pamlico County Training School in Stonewall, North Carolina. Deacon Hunter was a loyal and dedicated member of the Lord's Temple City of Refuge where he served on the Deacon Board, retired from America Bank Note in Bronx, New York, prior to relocating to Hastings.
To cherish his memories are his loving, devoted and dedicated wife, Doretha Lewis Hunter; sons, Herman (Reina) Lewis, St. Augustine, James Hunter, New York, Elder John (Nettie) Hunter, Delaware; daughters, Melissa (Richard) Dawson, Fair Haven, New Jersey, Martha (Glen) Godsen, Virginia; stepdaughters, Annie Ruth (Kenneth) Felder, Hastings, Bette (Joseph) Bradley, Delaware; sisters-in-law, Willie Mae James and Lillie Freeman both of Hastings, Ester Mae Alexander, High Springs, Rosa Washington, East Palatka, Leslie Amos, Fort Myers, Bernice Tomblin, West Palm Beach and Evangelist Retha Lewis, Amityville, New York; brothers-in-law, Elder Jimmie, Sr. (Darletha) Lewis, Simon Lewis, and George Alexander, all of Hastings, George (Linda) Lewis and Kevin Lewis both of Gainesville, Joseph (Gwen) Lewis, Miami, Dr. Sammie Tomblin, Altamonte Springs, Sylvester (Mary) Tomblin, Fort Lauderdale, and Wade Tomblin, New Brunswick, New Jersey; 30 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and loving friends.
Visitation of family and friends will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Lord's Temple City of Refuge, Bishop Thomas Cave, III, pastor, 140 Gilmore Street in Hastings.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with Bishop Cave as eulogist. Interment will follow in Armstrong Cemetery.
