Louis A. Gaitanis, age 99, of St. Augustine, passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 7, 2017. Born in East Moline, Illinois, he lived most of his life in Gainesville and St. Augustine.
Louis received a doctorate of law degree from the University of Florida. He became a professor there in the business college teaching business and real estate law. He retired as professor emeritus.
He had many interests including forestry, poetry, literature and Greek studies, including his own Greek heritage. Many festivals were highlighted by his colorful Greek dancing.
He leaves a lasting legacy through his family and his support of the Greek Orthodox Church.
He is survived by his wife, Constance; his daughter, Kathryn Richardson; sons, Robert and Thomas Gaitanis; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at St. Elizabeth Greek Orthodox Church in Gainesville. Graveside services and a lunch reception will follow. If preferred in lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Elizabeth Greek Orthodox Church building fund would be appreciated.
