Richard John "Rich" Mathiesen, age 79, of St. Augustine, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, at the Bailey Family Center for Caring. He was born in Chicago, Ill., and lived much of his life in Des Plaines, Ill. Richard attended Wright Community College and Oakton College in Des Plains, and Moody Bible College in Chicago. For 20 years he worked as a purchasing agent for EMI Engineering Co. in Des Plains. In 1996, Rich moved from Illinois to live in St. Augustine, where he became a member of Anastasia Baptist Church. He was very much involved in his church serving as a deacon, a loyal and beloved choir member, and enjoyed using his talents in the drama ministry. Everyone who knew him appreciated his quick wit and humor, as well as his strong spiritual commitment to God.
He is survived by his wife, Nuala Mathiesen of St. Augustine; a son, Jonathan Richard Mathiesen and his wife Gail of Portland, Oregon; a daughter, Heidi Louise Isaac and her husband, Steven, of Colorado Springs, Co.; and grandchildren, September Isaac, Samuel Mathiesen, and Addison Mathiesen. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Janet Mathiesen.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, at Anastasia Baptist Church with Dr. David Elder officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to: Anastasia Baptist Church Building Fund, 1650 A1A South, St. Augustine, FL 32080.
