Michael "Mike" Glenn Spitzer passed away on Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, in St. Augustine, Fla., at the Bailey Center for Caring. He was born in Cheverly, Md., and attended the University of Maryland.
His career and passion was flying. He was trained in the United States Air Force and also flew for the United States Customs Service Miami Air Branch for 30 years. He was a pilot and in aviation management at Homestead Air Force Base. He flew throughout the world and was especially proud of his drug interdiction work in South America with U.S. Customs. Our world is a safer place to live thanks to his incredible talent and bravery.
Mike and his wife Barbara Huber moved to St. Augustine in 2004 after enjoying their careers in Homestead. They moved to beautiful St. Augustine to begin their retirement life.
He is survived by his sons, Jason Spitzer of Maryland, Matthew Spitzer of Virginia and Sarah Mikalauskas, his daughter, from Maryland, and their spouses and five grandchildren. He is also survived by his stepsons, Chris Huber of St. Augustine, Jeffrey Huber of Fort Lauderdale and Jonathan Huber of Jacksonville, and their spouses and five grandchildren.
Interment will be in a Maryland National Veterans Cemetery with military honors.
A special "thank you" to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida staff, for the love, compassion and wonderful care of our beloved Mike. His nurses at the Bailey Center were truly God"s Angels as they cared for him so gently and helped our family so lovingly.
