Dr. John Defouw fell asleep in death Aug. 18, 2014, at the Clyde E. Lassen Veterans Nursing Home. John was born Aug. 10, 1915, in Alkmaar, Holland. After high school, he completed three years of officer"s training at the Royal Netherlands Naval Academy in Leyden, Holland. He came to the United States in 1937. He attended dental school at the University of Florida, graduating with a D.D.S. degree in 1941. He became a citizen of the United States in 1942.
When the United States got into World War II, John enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard. He served as assistant dental surgeon at THULE AEB in Greenland from February 1943 until the end of the war, being honorably discharged in June 1946. He established a fine dental practice in Bayside, N.Y., retiring in 1977. After retirement, he settled to St. Augustine, where he enjoyed many good years being near his beloved ocean. He was active with the St. Augustine Congregation of Jehovah"s Witnesses.
A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah"s Witnesses, 735 Kings Estate Road, St. Augustine, FL 32086.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Eva, St. Augustine; daughter, Susan Hoffmann; grandson, William, great-grandson, Jacob, all of Seaford, N.Y., granddaughter, Karen Woods, Boston, Mass.; son, Richard Defouw; granddaughter, Claire Elizabeth, grandson, Peter Daniel, all of Boulder, Colo.; and step-daughter, Joanne Henderson, St. Augustine.
