Helen Mikan passed away at the home of her son on Aug. 24, 2014. Helen was born in St. Augustine, Fla., on Sept. 8, 1925, the daughter of Elzie and Lily Hartley. Her husband of 52 years, Joseph (Big Mike) Mikan, preceded her in death in 1995.
Helen began her nursing career at the Florida East Coast Railroad Hospital in 1942 as a DCT student and was the last person to leave the hospital when it closed in 1963. She continued to work as the office nurse for Dr. Vernon Lockwood until her retirement in 1985. Helen enjoyed her occupation as a nurse and encouraged others to always seek a job they liked.
She is survived by three children, Cheryl Mikan Manucy, Andy (Roger) Edgell and Mike (Louise) Mikan; two sisters, Darla Wehking, Virginia, and Joan (Allison) Andrew; six grandchildren, Erika Edgell Ward, Anthony Edgell, Kevin Mikan and Paige Manucy, Joseph Manucy, Vinton, La., and Tim Mikan; eight great-grandchildren, Austin and Blaine Manucy, Dalton, Eden, and Cierra Edgell, Emily Ward, Zachary Mikan and Dakota Constantin.
Helen was devoted to her extended family of six generations of nieces and nephews and cousins too numerous to count.
While flowers are gratefully accepted, donations may be made to McDowell Baptist Church Building Fund or Haven Hospice are encouraged.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at McDowell Baptist Church with visitation beginning at 10 a.m.Ê
