Thomas J. "Tom" Porter, 69, of St. Augustine, died on Jan. 19, 2013 at the Bailey Family Center for Caring surrounded by his family. He was born and grew up in Southampton, N.Y., and was a 1964 graduate of Harvard University.

Tom lived for most of his life in Bellport, L.I., N.Y. and had been a seasonal resident of St. Augustine since 2006. He worked for the Suffolk County Probation Department for 37 years, and retired as deputy director of the department in 2009.

A gifted athlete, Tom competed in football, baseball and wrestling in his school years, and golf and softball as an adult. He was a devoted husband and father of seven children and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a master bridge player, enjoyed sailing, and loved his dogs. He served as president of the P.B.A. in Suffolk Co., N.Y.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Georgiana Porter of St. Augustine; sons, Tommy Porter (Lauren), Matthew Porter (Jill) and Michael Porter (Clarise), all of Bellport, N.Y., daughters, Kelly Hirsch (Rich) of Albany, N.Y., Maura Kuehl (Michael) of Bellport, N.Y.; grandchildren, Meagan, Travis, Jack, Giana, Brenna and MacKenzie. He was preceded in death by a son Sean, and a daughter, Kimberly Ann.

Private services will be held. Flowers are gratefully declined, and those wishing can make a donation in his memory to your local humane society, or to S.A.F.E. of St. Augustine, 6101 A1A South #101, St. Augustine, Florida 32080.
