Capt. John D. "Jack" Bailey, USN (Ret.), passed away on Jan. 28, 2013 at his residence surrounded by his family. Born in Erie, Pa., he was a long-time resident of St. Augustine.

Jack was an exceptionally loving man, father, and husband. In the U.S. Navy, Capt. Bailey commanded five ships and two squadrons, including the USS Stribling and the Desron13 destroyer. He served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He received many commendations during his duty, including two bronze stars and the National Defense Medal. He will be lovingly missed by his family, including his wife, Judy, children, William, Barbara, Blair, and his stepchildren, Richard, Lisa, and John.

A visitation will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. with a funeral service at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013 at St. Johns Family Funeral Home, 385 State Road 207, St. Augustine. Interment with military honors will follow at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In honor of Jack"s great love for his animals (three cats, three dogs), the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Florida Humane Society, 3870 North Powerline Road, Pompano Beach, FL 33073, in Jack"s name.
