Herbert Elliott Conkey, 89, St. Augustine, died Feb. 10, 2013, at the Bailey Family Center for Caring. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and had resided in St. Augustine since 1981, moving here from Manassas, Va. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. After being honorably discharged from the Coast Guard he began his career as an electrical engineer with IBM, retiring in 1980 after 32 years of service. He was a life member of the Coast Guard Combat Veterans Association, founding member of the St. Augustine Sports Club, and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at Grace United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Walker, officiating.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Harriet Anne Conkey, St. Augustine; one daughter, Sally Barnhart, Fort Worth, Texas; two sons, Thomas Conkey (Kathy), Front Royal, Va., Dennis E. Conkey (Tyna), St. Augustine; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
