Samuel R. "Bob" Tarrant, 87, of St. Augustine, passed away on Oct. 12, 2013, at Flagler Hospital, surrounded by his family. Born and raised in Manchester, N.H., Bob attended Dartmouth College for a year before joining the U.S. Navy during World War II. After serving his country, he returned to school and graduated from Dartmouth with both a bachelor"s and a master"s degree in physics. He later earned a master"s in electrical engineering from New York University. Bob worked for Western Electric for six years, before transferring to Bell Labs, where he worked as a systems engineer from 1951 until his retirement in 1987. During his working years and retirement he enjoyed calling square dances in his spare time. Upon relocating from New Jersey to St. Augustine in 1990, he stayed very busy volunteering with the St. Johns County Library, teaching computers for 10 years, serving as treasurer for both the St. Augustine Shores Homeowner"s Association and the Sons of the American Revolution and was active with the St. Johns County Recreation Association. Above all, Bob was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and he will be deeply missed.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas N. Tarrant and a sister, Constance T. Rinden. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Katherine "Kay" Tarrant of St. Augustine; daughters, Gail Buckley and her husband, Bill, of San Jose, Calif, and Sharon Wendelgass, and her husband, Jim, of Chester Springs, Pa.; a brother, John B. Tarrant of Manchester, N.H.; two granddaughters, Katie and Andrea Buckley; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, at St. Johns Family Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Baker, officiating. A visitation, beginning at 10 a.m. will precede the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob"s memory can be made to .
