John Peter Westervelt, 88, passed away Oct. 15, 2013, at the Bailey Center. He served his country in the Marine Corps for three years during World War II. He attended art school and then managed an art department. He became a sales representative in the New York City area before coming to St. Augustine in 1971 with his wife Maude and three children.

John did portraits in oil, pastel and charcoal. He did quick sketch portraits in various locations and in watercolor of St. Augustine.

He leaves behind his devoted wife of 62 years, Maude; three children, Diane, Cynthia and John; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
