Edward William Matthews, age 79, passed away peacefully on Nov. 1, 2013, at the Bailey Family Center with his beloved wife and family by his side.

Edward was born July 28, 1934, in Fort Meyers. At age 17, he enlisted in the Air Force, where he was trained in communications and operating large earth moving equipment. After training, he was sent overseas and was stationed in Newfoundland, Greenland, England and Germany where he worked replacing communication towers during the Korean War. While on leave in Jacksonville, he married his wife of 61 years, Lorena Parham. In 1954, he returned to the United States and was stationed in Washington. After being honorably discharged from active duty in 1959, he returned to Florida with his family.

Over the next 15 years, he worked for Firestone in Jacksonville and Fairchild Hiller Corporation in St. Augustine. In 1972, he moved to Vero Beach, where he started a successful career in agriculture, which included cattle farming, citrus groves and fishing in the Florida Keys. After retiring in 1994, he and his wife returned to St. Augustine, to be close to family.

Edward is survived by his wife, Lorena Parham, daughters, Lorena (Richard) Hernandez, and Audrey Matthews, his grandchildren, Michael (Gina) Hernandez, Loren (Harry) Wood and Matthew (Danielle) Hernandez, and his brother, David (Cathy) Matthews.

In celebration of his life, a memorial service will take place at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Anastasia Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make a contribution in his memory to Community Hospice, Bailey Family Center for Caring.
