James Hager Sherrill

James Hager Sherrill (Jim) of Odenville died peacefully on June 5th. A true Renaissance man, he mastered everything he tried, and he tried nearly everything. He was an athlete, artist, craftsman, gardener, carpenter, naturalist, and adventurer. A direct descendant of William Sherrill, the Conestoga Trader and first settler in the Shenandoah Valley, Adam Sherrill, the first American of European descent to settle west of the Catawba River in North Carolina, and Capt. William Sherrill, who fought at the Battle of King's Mountain, he shared their intelligence, courage, curiosity, and love of adventure. A native of Statesville, North Carolina, Jim is survived by his sisters Anne Sayetta of Greenville, N.C., and Jane Lasley of Raleigh, N.C. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Beth, and his brother, Frank. A memorial service to celebrate Jim's life will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, June 14 at Chapel in the Pines, Pell City. In lieu of flowers, he would have appreciated donations to the Audubon Society. He loved the birds!
